Spectacular Comeback After A False Start

The first three days didn’t go well for Antanas “Tony G” Guoga. The Australian-Lithuanian player came to the Maestral Resort & Casino with a hefty bankroll but lost big in the early sessions, including two pots worth over a million each. On Day 4, however, he returned to the table with a $1.5 million (NZ$2,49m) stack, determined to make a spectacular comeback.

Eight hours into the fourth day, the biggest hand of the day took place between Tony G and Tan Xuan, who started the hand with $1.4 million (NZ$2,33m) and $1.9 million (NZ$ 3,15m), respectively. Tony G, sitting under-the-gun, put in a straddle for $4,000 holding Jack-8 of spades. The action folded to Tan Xuan in the small blind, who called with King-4 of hearts. The big blind, Andy Ni, folded Ten-Three of spades, and the action returned to Guoga, who raised to $24,000. Xuan called.

NZ$ 3,32 million Jackpot

With $55,000 in the pot, the flop came Six of clubs, Five of spades, and Three of diamonds. Xuan, holding an open-ended straight draw and a backdoor flush draw, checked. Guoga, with a flush draw and two overcards, bet nearly the pot—$50,000. Xuan responded with a check-raise to $160,000, and Guoga called. The turn brought the Ten of hearts, and Xuan bet $382,000 into a $375,000 pot. After a brief pause, Guoga moved all-in for $1,261,000. Xuan quickly folded, and Tony G revealed the Jack of spades as he scooped up the pot, which totaled just over $2 million (NZ$ 3,32 million).
