Tab NZ Fails To Meet Budget Again
In the month of September, Tab NZ has once again failed to meet their budgetary targets despite all corona measures being lifted in New Zealand. The corona pandemic was initially indicated by Tab NZ as the main reason for having failed to meet the budgetary targets. Higher cost of living was then seen as the main indicator.聽聽
Reported profit for the month of September was $11.3m, which was also behind budget by $1.2m, whilst the turnover resulted in $212.7m, missing Tab鈥檚 budget by 2.0%. This followed similar patterns in both the months of July and August, during which Tab NZ fell short of both revenue and profit budgets.

Lifted Corona Measures Since 13 September
September鈥檚 missed budgets came despite the government dropping the Corona Traffic Light System from 13 September, which eased the last of the remaining restrictions that were put into place in both retail and hospitality. Tab NZ stated that while the easing of mask restrictions had an overall positive impact on retail traffic, other elements, such as the higher cost of living, abandoned races and yet another month of a drop in starters across all racing codes had a huge impact on the missed budget in September.

The operator also referred to the fact that the average number of thoroughbred starters per race was only 10.1, significantly below the average of 10.6 in its 2022 financial year. At the same time, Tab鈥檚 operating expenses were $100,000 above budget at $10.5m, whilst payments to Racing Codes during the month stood at a total of $12.3m, in line with budget. As for sports related betting activities in New Zealand, the most popular sports event to bet on was the national team鈥檚 rugby union game between the All Blacks and the Wallabies that took place on the 24th of September in the Eden Park Stadium and led to a total of $1.2m in bets. The game ended in an impressive 40-14 win for the All Blacks.
